Well done to all of you! There are more of you than you think, however. I moved to rural SouthWest England 4 and a half years ago, and stopped shopping at supermarkets. The only things I now get from convenience stores and/or supermarkets is cleaning materials and wine&booze, although I made my own wine the last two years with grapes from our greenhouse. It hasn't matured yet, so we still have to see what results that will give. We buy a pig and a lamb once a year from organic farms close to use, slaughtered and butchered on the farm where they grew up (no foodmiles there, and less stress for the animals!). Our huge freezer uses about £4 worth of eletricity a month, so the add-on to our carbon footprint is negligable.
All our fruit and vegetables come from local growers, and we don't buy exotic stuff anymore, just what is in season and locally grown. Also, my husband has made some new friends, and goes out hunting, shooting and fishing with them. A wonderfull seabass with a side of wild mushrooms would fetch a very high price in London, but we have that regularly for free! Last Saturday I had three brace of pheasants hanging in my shed, and we do share these bounties with others around the town.
You can live without sopping!
